February. You were good to me, but my you went by fast. This post is coming a little past due, but still completely relevant. February was a month of celebration; Black History Month, turning a year older, reuniting with my teammates and many others..
This was the Nike commercial that aired in early February (12th) during the Grammy's. I love the awareness Nikes brings in this commercial to the boundaries that athletes have broken and the strive to unite more as a people outside of the playing field. "If we can be equals in sport, we can be equals everywhere."
We’ve come far as a human race. We’re not where our ideals and realities align yet, but looking back - we’ve become better in many aspects in terms of recognizing each other’s humanity. And at the end of it all, it boils down to that doesn’t it? Humanity.
Despite the color of the skin, the gender, what we were born with, what we deal with, however we adorn our bodies, at the end of the day we are all the same, inherently equal beings. We are humans - breathing, longing, loving, persisting. The same blood that makes my heart pump is the same blood that keeps you alive. Underneath the quick judgment, social conditioning, the narrow-mindedness, I am you and you are me.
